Unlike a dog, which can skip a meal without much consequence, a cat copes very poorly with prolonged fasting. A study by Chan, published in 2009 in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, notes that inappetence is among the most common presenting complaints in sick cats, and that insufficient food intake, if it continues, can lead to serious metabolic complications, particularly in cats carrying extra weight. Why feline inappetence is never trivial
A cat's liver is not built to mobilise large amounts of fat over a short period. When a cat, especially one carrying a little extra weight, stops eating for several days, its body can develop hepatic lipidosis, a potentially serious but preventable liver condition if caught early. This species-specific metabolic fragility is what makes prolonged fasting more concerning in cats than in dogs.
What are the most common causes?
A too-abrupt food change, stress from a move or a new pet arriving, a bowl placed too close to the litter box, dental or digestive pain, or a systemic illness such as kidney disease can all show up as reduced appetite. In older cats, an age-related decline in sense of smell also lowers the natural appeal of food.
How long before an urgent vet visit?
A cat that has not touched food at all for more than 24 hours, or is eating noticeably less than usual for more than 48 hours, should be seen by a vet without further delay, and that window shrinks further for a cat that is overweight or already unwell. Warming a pouch of wet food slightly or offering something highly palatable can help in the short term, but it is no substitute for a diagnosis if the refusal continues.
