Toxic and forbidden foods for canaries and small birds

The canary is a small seed-eater with a fast metabolism: what is only a mild inconvenience for a human can be a massive, dangerous dose for a twenty-gram bird. Knowing which foods to never offer is a basic safety rule. Avocado in particular contains a substance called persin, whose toxicity in cage birds is described in several clinical cases and can cause fatal respiratory distress. Foods to ban outright
Some foods are strictly forbidden: avocado in any form, chocolate and cocoa (theobromine and caffeine), alcohol, salty or very sugary foods, onion and garlic, and the pits and seeds of many fruits (apple, cherry, apricot), which release cyanide compounds. Salt in particular is poorly tolerated by such a small body and can seriously upset its hydration.
The false good ideas
Bread, biscuits, table scraps or sunflower seeds fed freely are not "toxic" in the strict sense, but they unbalance the diet and encourage obesity and fatty liver disease. Milk and dairy products, which the bird cannot digest, should also be avoided. A base of suitable seeds or pellets, topped up with safe leafy greens, remains the reference.
What to give safely
Many vegetables (endive, broccoli, spinach in small amounts, grated carrot) and some seedless fruits are fine as extras. Is a single bite of avocado dangerous?
Yes, potentially: given a canary's very low weight, even a small amount can be enough to cause serious poisoning. It is best never to offer any.
Are sunflower seeds forbidden?
No, but they are very fatty: keep them to a very small amount, or risk dietary imbalance and weight gain.
What should I do after accidental ingestion?
Contact an avian vet immediately: in such a small bird, every hour counts.
