A sick bird hides its symptoms by instinct, a trait inherited from the wild where showing the slightest weakness attracts predators. Why weigh your bird regularly?
A 10% weight swing over a short period, or a steady loss over several days, calls for a prompt visit to an avian vet, well before other signs show up. A 2026 study by Bonneh, Tuval, Ben-Shitrit, Goffer, Cohen and Vicario, published in PLOS ONE, built an automated weighing system for small songbirds and found overnight weight swings of around 4% in perfectly healthy canaries, a normal physiological fluctuation that highlights the value of always weighing your bird at the same time of day for comparable readings.
Which scale should you choose?
A standard electronic kitchen scale isn't precise enough for a small bird: a scale accurate to a tenth of a gram works better for a budgie, or to the nearest gram for a large parrot. A flat platform or a suitable perch, rather than a plain bowl, makes weighing easier for a bird that isn't used to being handled.
How do you build weighing into a routine?
Weighing your bird once a week, always before its first meal and at the same time, lets you catch an abnormal trend quickly without adding stressful handling. Logging each reading in a notebook or a dedicated app makes it easy to read the trend over several months, a useful complement to tracking daily food quantities.
