Monthly food budget for a macaw: what should you really set aside?

Feeding a macaw properly costs on average 40 to 70 € per month, including quality pellets, fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts and supplements. That is noticeably more than a budgie or a cockatiel, in line with the bird's size and a lifespan that can pass 50 years.

What do pellets, the base of the diet, cost?
- Premium pellets for a large parrot: about 25 to 35 € a month for a quality bag, the recommended base of 60 to 70 % of the diet.
- Seed and nut mix as a supplement: 10 to 15 €, to be measured carefully to avoid excess fat.
- Daily fresh fruit and vegetables: 5 to 10 €, often taken from the household's own shopping.

Why not cut corners on pellet quality?
A study by Hugues Beaufrère and colleagues, published in 2013 in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, examined more than 7,600 psittacine birds and found a notable prevalence of advanced atherosclerotic lesions, particularly among large parrots fed a diet high in saturated fat (see the study). A quality pellet, better balanced than a low-end seed mix, reduces this long-term risk and avoids vet bills far higher than the money saved on food.
How can you cut the bill without sacrificing balance?
Buy pellets in multi-kilogram bags rather than small packs, grow a few sprouted seeds at home for variety at low cost, and favour seasonal fruit and vegetables. On the other hand, never permanently replace pellets with a seed mix alone: the immediate saving is paid for in health a few years later.
