Cockatoo diet: preventing obesity in a greedy bird
Affectionate, loud and greedy, the cockatoo is also one of the parrots most prone to excess weight in captivity: less exercise than in free flight, fatty seeds on tap and table scraps all push the scales up. And obesity in a parrot means lipomas, fatty liver disease and a shortened lifespan. The shared principles are in our bird food section; here is the cockatoo version.
Pellets first, seeds counted
A landmark review of psittacine nutrition by Koutsos, Matson and Klasing, published in 2001 in the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery, reminds us that seed diets are too fatty and deficient in calcium and vitamin A, and that formulated diets meet needs far better (study on Google Scholar). For a cockatoo, aim for 65 to 75% pellets, a seed portion limited to one or two teaspoons a day, and ban free-access sunflower seed — our article on the sunflower seed mistake explains why.
Vegetables freely, fruit in moderation
Broccoli, pepper, carrot, green beans, leafy greens: serve a plate of varied vegetables every morning, raw or briefly cooked without salt. Fruit, being sweeter, stays an extra two or three times a week. No avocado, no chocolate, no salty leftovers: sharing the family meal is a classic trap with a bird that begs this well.
Making the bird work for its food
In the wild, a cockatoo spends hours husking and shredding: serving the ration in a plain bowl removes that activity and turns calories into boredom, then into feather plucking. Foraging toys, vegetable skewers and hidden portions stretch out mealtime. That stimulation is also a behavioural prevention tool, as detailed in our article on cockatoo feather plucking.
- Pellets designed for large parrots: the daily base, weighed at first to calibrate.
- One to two teaspoons of seeds a day: inside foraging toys only.
- A daily vegetable plate: half the served volume can be plant matter.
- A weekly weigh-in: a kitchen scale with a perch on top is all it takes.
A lasting gain of more than 10% over ideal weight warrants an avian vet visit and a ration plan. Find the species-specific pointers on the cockatoo food page.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a fit cockatoo weigh?
Depending on the species, from 300 g for a small galah to over 800 g for a sulphur-crested cockatoo: it is the individual curve that matters.
Are peanuts allowed?
Occasionally, shelled and human-grade only: shells can carry moulds that produce aflatoxins.
My cockatoo refuses pellets — what should I do?
A gradual transition over several weeks, pellets mixed into the seeds then the proportion reversed, without ever starving the bird.
