🎾Enriching a Goldfish tank: hardscape, shoal and occupation

Goldfish : Choose sturdy plants such as anubias or vallisneria, as goldfish uproot and nibble everything. Smooth driftwood and rounded stones provide exploration areas without damaging their fins.

In short: 20 to 30 cm as an adult, 100 L minimum per fish, cold water at 18 to 22 °C with no heater. Gregarious, curious and greedy, it fares poorly alone and needs companions far more than a solitary bowl. A heavy-waste cold-water fish reaching 20 to 30 cm: oversized filtration, a large volume and regular water changes are non-negotiable.

Hardscape designed for its swimming zone

The Goldfish lives throughout the water column: tall plants at the back, wood as refuge and genuine swimming lanes organise its volume. An aquarium’s enrichment is its hiding places and its currents — not fluorescent ornaments.

Group life: the first enrichment

From 2 individuals up, the Goldfish becomes itself again: hierarchies settling, displays, coordinated swimming — in small numbers it lives in chronic stress and loses its colours — group size is the species’ first “toy”, before any decor purchase.

Food as occupation

Vary the serving style: frozen prey released into the current, food scattered at several points of the tank, feeding spots moved day to day. Hunting occupies — the fishkeeping equivalent of a snuffle mat.

Frequently asked questions

How many Goldfish should be kept together?

2 minimum, more if the tank allows: it is a group species, and numbers shape its behaviour and colours alike.

How do you enrich a Goldfish tank?

Three levers: decor set to its zone (throughout the water column), feeding that changes form and place, and group numbers. The rest is marketing.
