The Poodle is an intelligent, athletic dog that comes in several sizes, from the roughly 3 kg toy to the standard, which can exceed 20 kg.   The ration varies hugely by variety: around 60 to 90 g per day for a toy, versus 250 to 350 g for an adult standard. Whatever the size, it is an active, lively dog that does well on a quality, protein-rich diet.

  Its curly coat barely sheds but mats quickly: brushing at least two or three times a week and a clip every six to eight weeks are essential, with grooming budgets often between 45 and 90 € depending on size. The drop ears, where hair grows inside the canal, need regular checking.

  Match the bed to the variety, from size S for a toy to size L (80 cm and up) for a standard. It adapts well to flats and houses alike, provided it gets enough daily outings.

  A toy or miniature travels easily in a bag or soft crate, while a standard needs a rigid size-L crate or a boot divider. A former water retriever, it often loves swimming: a flotation vest can be useful on a boat or paddleboard.

  The basic kit includes a properly sized harness, a slicker brush, a metal comb and possibly clippers if you maintain the trim yourself. A coat is useful for closely clipped dogs in winter, as the coat has little insulating undercoat.
