Lhasa Apso gear, family by family

• 🍖 Food

For a moderately active adult of 5 to 8 kg, allow around 90 to 130 g of kibble per day. A breed with an often long lifespan, it benefits from an early switch to a suitable senior diet, generally around 8 to 9 years of age.

• 🧴 Care & grooming

Its long, dense double coat demands thorough brushing several times a week, ideally daily if the hair is kept floor-length. Many owners choose a short maintenance clip at the groomer every six to eight weeks, at around 45 to 65 €.

• 🎾 Toys & enrichment

Less play-driven than other small breeds, it still enjoys small chew toys and calm scent games. Respect its independent streak: short, varied sessions work better than long, imposed ones.

• 🏠 Bedding & habitat

A size-S to M bed in a quiet spot with a view of the comings and goings suits it well: a former watchdog of Tibetan monasteries, it likes to observe and readily announces visitors. Its thick coat makes it fairly cold-hardy but sensitive to strong heat.

• 🧳 Travel & safety

Its 5 to 8 kg build allows travel in a soft or rigid size-S crate, by car or train. Get it used to the crate early: its independent character can make it resistant to being handled against its will.

• 🧰 Accessories

Plan for a pin brush, a wide-toothed metal comb, a detangling spray and a size-S harness. Hair bands to tie up the topknot keep its eyes clear, as they are often hidden by the breed's characteristic fringe.
