In short: Small dog, 24-35 cm at the withers (8-14 kg), smooth coat, flat muzzle, moderate energy level. A playful, affectionate little companion, perfectly cut out for apartment life. Its compact build and flat face make it a very poor swimmer that struggles to regulate its temperature: a flotation vest near water and a cooling mat in summer are near-mandatory.
Coat care, brush by brush
The French Bulldog needs a grooming glove or rubber brush, once a week; its shedding stays moderate, with two seasonal peaks in spring and autumn. The ritual settles in early, in brief rewarded sessions — the brush then becomes bonding time rather than a chore.
Baths, claws, ears, teeth
A bath every two to three months, or when genuinely dirty, with a dog-pH shampoo — never a human product. On a French Bulldog, the facial folds need wiping several times a week with a soft cloth, then careful drying: trapped moisture feeds dermatitis. Check claws monthly, inspect ears at the same time, and brush teeth two or three times a week.
Health watch-points for the French Bulldog
The breed is notably monitored for: brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, disc herniation and vertebral malformations and skin allergies. These predispositions are not a fate, but they shape preventive care — and any unusual sign belongs at the vet’s, not in a shop aisle. Life expectancy sits around 9 to 12 years.
