Description
You planted, and three weeks later the leaves are melting, yellowing or disappearing into your cichlids’ or goldfish’s stomachs. Our guide weighs the two options honestly: live plants work for the water (nitrates, oxygen, competing with algae), artificial ones bring decoration and cover with no upkeep. In a tank of grazing fish or with weak lighting, artificial is often the only kind that lasts.
This plant stands 45 to 49 cm tall depending on the model and goes at the back of the tank: the stems drape, create shaded areas where shy fish take refuge and hide pipes and filter. The moulded plastic is coloured through, with no paint to flake, and the maker states it has no effect on the water. The flat base tucks under a few centimetres of sand or gravel.
About 200 g. It needs a tank with at least 50 cm of water depth to keep its shape; in a shallower tank it bends at the surface. It doesn’t replace filtration or water changes. Rinse it before placing it and brush it when algae settle.

Frequently asked questions

The flat base must be covered with a few centimetres of sand or gravel to hold it.
Can I mix it with live plants?
Yes: live plants keep using nitrates, the artificial one fills the spots where nothing grows.
