Description
Dogs barely sweat: they cool down mainly by panting. In strong heat, on a hike or a walk that runs long, that system quickly hits its limits and heatstroke can set in sooner than you think, especially in flat-faced breeds, heavy or older dogs. In the study by Benito and colleagues on military dogs (covered in our guide), dogs wearing a cooling vest finished exercise with a core temperature about 0.6 °C lower than dogs running without one.
This vest works by evaporation, as in that study: soak it in cool water, wring it out, put it on. The middle layer holds the water, the outer layer reflects some of the sun and encourages evaporation, which carries heat away. It opens on top, fastens with buckles under the belly and has a ring for the lead.
Sizes (chest girth): S 30-48 cm, M 39-56 cm, L 49-70 cm, XL 60-80 cm; measure just behind the front legs. Polyester, turquoise and grey. It cools as long as it is damp: re-soak it when it dries. It is no substitute for shade, water or staying in during the hottest hours, and a dog that staggers, vomits or stops responding must be cooled and taken to a vet as an emergency.
Delivered in 8 to 15 working days, free from €49; 14 days to exchange or return it if the size is wrong.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it stay cool?
As long as it is damp. Depending on heat and wind it dries faster or slower: carry water to re-soak it.
Should I put it in the freezer?
No. This model works by evaporation; cool water is enough. A frozen vest isn’t more effective and can be unpleasant.
Between two sizes, which one?
Measure the chest behind the front legs. Between two sizes, go up: a vest that is too tight hampers breathing and evaporation.
