The ferret-proof room: a five-step method
The Merck Veterinary Manual sums up the principle: ferrets are intensely curious, nearly fearless, highly persistent and able to squeeze into very small openings. So make the room safe before the first session, then check again.
Step 1: choose the room. One room to begin with (living room or bedroom), with no built-in appliances, no recliner or sofa bed, and a door that closes properly. Not the kitchen, not the laundry room, not the bathroom.
Step 2: get down to ferret level. Lie on the floor and look: gaps behind furniture, holes around pipes and radiators, under the sofa, loose skirting boards, air vents. The Merck recommends sealing every opening larger than 1 inch (2.5 cm), with wire mesh rather than tape, which ferrets pull off.
Step 3: remove anything that can be swallowed or is poisonous. Erasers, rubber bands, balloons, foam, rubber stoppers, earbuds, insoles and shoes, latex toys, handbags and backpacks (medicines, chewing gum), plants, ashtrays, cleaning products, batteries, coins.
Step 4: neutralise mechanical traps. Underside of the sofa closed with tightly stapled fabric, recliners removed from the room, cupboard doors locked (childproof locks are not always enough), cables in protective sleeves, windows closed, rugs removed or watched (a ferret hiding underneath can be stepped on).
Step 5: set out the essentials. A litter tray in a corner, water, one or two tunnels, a spare bed, sturdy toys.
The full “Safe room” checklist is in the “Practical Checklists” chapter. Go round the room with it before the first session, then once a month: a ferret always ends up finding the weak spot you had not seen.
