Moving house with a rabbit is prepared like a logistics operation: rigid carrier introduced in advance, climate-controlled journey, and above all its territory reinstalled first on arrival — before your own boxes. Rabbits are territorial creatures of habit: it is not the journey that stresses them most, it is the loss of their landmarks. Done well, a move is digested in three to seven days.

How do you prepare the rabbit before the move?
Two weeks ahead, leave the carrier (20 to 40 €) open in the pen, lined with hay: it must become a familiar shelter, not a trap. On the day, isolate the rabbit in a room free of boxes with water, hay and its tray while the furniture goes by: the comings and goings of the movers are the real source of panic. Change nothing in its diet that week.
How do you organise the journey on moving day?
The rules for a calm trip, whether it lasts twenty minutes or six hours:
- Rigid carrier belted on the back seat or wedged in a footwell, never in the closed boot of a saloon car;
- Temperature between 15 and 24 °C: air conditioning without direct airflow, never a car in full sun, even for three minutes;
- Non-slip base: an absorbent pad plus hay from the old pen, soaked in reassuring smells;
- Breaks every two hours to offer water and fresh greens, without taking the rabbit out;
- Bonded pair: transport them together, each other’s scent keeps them calm.
What should you do on arriving in the new home?
Set up the pen first, identically: same tray, same rack, same toys, arranged the same way, with unwashed litter from the old home to carry the smells over. Open the carrier inside the pen and let the rabbit explore at its own pace. Wait until appetite and droppings have been normal for 48 h before expanding the territory, room by room, just like a first setup in an apartment.
Which stress signs should you watch after arrival?
A rabbit that does not eat within 12 hours of arriving, stops producing droppings or stays hunched must see a rabbit-savvy exotics vet urgently: stress easily triggers GI stasis. Can you move a rabbit 800 km?
Yes, in one day with breaks, or in two legs with a night in a foldable pen. Trains accept rabbits in carriers (pet ticket around 7 €).
Should you sedate the rabbit for the journey?
No, never self-medicate. For a very anxious rabbit, an exotics vet can recommend calming pheromones or a suitable protocol.
My rabbit is leaving droppings everywhere in the new home, is this permanent?
No, it is new-territory marking: it stops within one to two weeks if the tray stays in the same place and the rabbit is neutered.
