What happens when you cut the filter
Without water flow, the filter's bacteria stop being supplied with oxygen and waste-laden water. In just a few hours, part of that colony can begin to die, releasing on restart a spike of nitrogen compounds dangerous to fish. The night-time oxygen trap
At night, plants and fish consume oxygen without photosynthesis producing any: dissolved oxygen reaches its minimum precisely at dawn. Yet the filter, by agitating the surface, promotes gas exchange. Turning it off at night thus deprives the tank of its oxygenation at the worst moment, with a suffocation risk, especially in summer. Reduce the noise without stopping everything
