Fishless cycling: the ammonia method
Stocking a new aquarium with fish on day one is the leading cause of beginner losses: without an established colony of purifying bacteria, the ammonia fish produce climbs to lethal levels within hours. Fishless cycling avoids this risk by feeding the bacteria artificially before any fish arrive. A study by Timothy Hovanec and Edward DeLong, published in 1996 in Applied and Environmental Microbiology, found that the nitrifying bacteria in freshwater aquaria differ substantially from those identified in marine aquaculture, which explains why freshwater cycling is often slower and more unpredictable than assumed (study on Google Scholar). Why cycle fishless rather than with fish
"Cycling with fish", long the default approach, exposes the tank's first inhabitants to weeks of ammonia and nitrite spikes: stress, gill damage, early mortality. The fishless method removes that risk by supplying an artificial ammonia source so bacteria can establish themselves before any animal is introduced.
The ammonia method, step by step
- Dose pure ammonia (no surfactant, no fragrance, available from hardware stores or online) to reach 2 to 4 ppm in the filled, filtered tank.
- Test daily for ammonia and nitrite: after one to two weeks, nitrites appear and climb in turn.
- Keep dosing ammonia daily to maintain 2 to 4 ppm, until the tank processes both ammonia and nitrite to zero within 24 hours.
- The cycle is complete once that 24-hour clearance is stable for at least three consecutive days: the tank can then take its first fish.
Speeding up the cycle
The most reliable shortcut is seeding the new filter with media or gravel taken from an already-cycled aquarium: bacteria are present in quantity there and colonise the new tank within days instead of weeks. Bottled bacteria products help too, though results vary by strain. Either way, keep monitoring with reliable water tests, the only real way to know where the cycle actually stands.

Can household ammonia be used?
Only if it is pure, with no foaming agent or fragrance: shake the bottle, and no foam is a good sign. If in doubt, buy lab-grade ammonia sold specifically for cycling.
How long does fishless cycling take?
Plan on four to six weeks for a first tank, though the bacterial population keeps stabilising for several months after that. Factor this timeline in from the moment you choose your aquarium size, well before buying any fish.
Can food be used instead of ammonia?
