Feeding guppies: what to give, how often and how to vary it
The guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a small opportunistic omnivore. A classic study of guppy feeding showed that, in the wild, its digestive tract mainly contains algae and aquatic insect larvae: it is a fish that nibbles a bit of everything, rather than a strict carnivore or herbivore (research on Google Scholar). A varied base
Quality flakes or micro-pellets, rich in protein, form the base. To that you regularly add live or frozen prey such as brine shrimp, daphnia or bloodworms, and a plant share (spirulina flakes, a piece of blanched courgette). Two small meals a day beat one big one: the guppy has a small stomach and a fast metabolism. The golden rule: give only what is eaten in one to two minutes.
