Automatic fish feeder: go on holiday with peace of mind
A reliable automatic fish feeder costs 15 to 40 € and takes over from 4 to 5 days of absence. Below 4 days, the best option is… to do nothing: healthy adult fish fast for a week without harm. The real holiday danger isn’t hunger, it’s overfeeding.
Do your fish really need to be fed?
Less than you’d think. A long weekend justifies no equipment at all: a mature, planted tank offers biofilm and micro-organisms to graze on. The feeder becomes useful from 4 or 5 days, essential beyond a week, especially for fry and fast-metabolism species. Absolutely avoid the cheap plaster “holiday blocks” that crumble and pollute the water.
Drum or screw feed: which mechanism should you choose?
- Rotating drum (15 to 30 €): a compartment that tips over 1 to 4 times a day. Simple, reliable, dose set by opening a hatch. The standard.
- Screw feed or double drum (30 to 60 €): finer dosing and several food types, for large tanks.
- Wi-Fi connected models (35 to 70 €): phone-controlled feeding and alerts — a pleasant gadget but not essential.
- Deciding criteria: moisture protection (ventilated hopper), stable mounting, battery operation with a low-battery indicator.
How do you set it up without polluting the tank?
Test it for a week before you leave, while you’re there: set the dose to minimum — one feeding a day is enough. Moisture is the enemy: place the unit away from the filter outlet and air bubbles, on a dry lid, and fill it with granules rather than flakes, which stick and jam the hatch. Uneaten excess will send nitrites and nitrates through the roof, as our guide to the nitrogen cycle explains.
What else should you check before leaving?
The feeder only handles food: do a water change the day before you go, clean the filter a week ahead (not the day before, so you can check it restarts properly), put the lighting on a timer and change the batteries. A breakdown-prevention kit is detailed in our article on the emergency kit.
Frequently asked questions
The neighbour or the automatic feeder?
The feeder. Well-meaning neighbours almost always overfeed: if someone does come by, prepare daily doses in a pill organizer rather than leaving them the tub.
How long can a feeder run unattended?
A standard drum holds 2 to 4 weeks of feedings depending on capacity; the batteries last several months. Beyond a month, arrange a check-up visit.
Does it work for an outdoor pond?
Dedicated pond feeders exist (60 to 150 €), weatherproof and high capacity. An aquarium model wouldn’t survive outdoor humidity.
