Vesell, published in 1967 in the journal Science, found that laboratory rodents housed on pine or cedar shavings showed roughly twice the liver enzyme activity of animals housed on hardwood shavings (beech, birch, maple), with measurable changes appearing within the first 24 hours. The cause: the aromatic hydrocarbons and phenols naturally released by these softwoods, which can induce liver enzymes and disrupt drug metabolism — a mechanism now well documented in laboratory animal medicine, where pine and cedar have been excluded for this reason for decades.
Why this matters especially for ferrets
- A liver already under load from an exclusively meat-based diet high in protein and fat.

Which materials to choose instead
