A waterproof cover protects a bed's foam or stuffing from toilet accidents, mud tracked in after a walk, or the dampness of a wet dog settling straight onto it. When is it genuinely useful?
- A puppy in house-training: guards against the frequent accidents that come with training.
- A dog that's out in all weather: stops mud and moisture from soaking into the bed's core.
- An older or incontinent dog: daily use that easily justifies the investment.
- Recovery from surgery: makes cleanup easier after a procedure or a messy treatment.
Which materials should you choose?
Coated polyester offers solid water resistance and dries fast, but breathes less well than water-repellent treated cotton, more comfortable for a dog that lies down for long stretches. Covers with a waterproof side and a fabric side, reversible by season, often strike the best balance between protection and comfort, in the same spirit as choosing between a plastic bed and a cushion.
How do you look after it properly?
Favour a model that's machine washable at 30-40°C over hand-washing, which becomes a chore for something used daily. A waterproof cover that doesn't come off the bed easily loses much of its practical value: check for a full zip before buying, a criterion just as relevant as for an orthopedic dog bed.
What budget should you plan for?
A universal waterproof cover costs 12 to 30 € depending on size, a budget easily offset by the bed foam it preserves, which would cost far more to replace.

Slightly, if the material is fully coated in plastic: favour a mixed waterproof-fabric cover to balance protection and comfort.
