Orthopedic bed for an older dog: a real boost for its joints
An orthopedic dog bed is built on high-density foam, often memory foam, that spreads the body's weight and relieves pressure points on the hips, elbows and spine. It is a worthwhile investment for a dog that is older, arthritic, large-breed or overweight: expect 50 to 150 € depending on size and foam quality.
What sets a genuine orthopedic bed apart?
The difference lies in the thickness and density of the foam: a genuine orthopedic model offers at least 8 to 10 cm of high-density foam that does not collapse under the dog's weight. Simple in-store test: press down hard with your hand; if you can feel the floor, the foam is inadequate. Many budget memory-effect cushions are pure marketing comfort: be demanding about the spec sheet.
Which dogs actually benefit?
Seniors that are stiff when getting up, dogs diagnosed with arthritis or dysplasia, large breeds whose joints work hard, and thin dogs whose prominent bones press against the floor. The bed cures nothing: if your dog limps, struggles to rise or whimpers, diagnosis and treatment belong to the vet. The bed is part of a wider comfort package, alongside a suitable diet such as our senior dog food and a ramp for the sofa or the car.
Which buying criteria should you compare?
- High-density foam of at least 8 cm, ideally memory foam.
- Size: the dog must be able to lie fully on its side, legs stretched out.
- Removable, machine-washable cover, with a waterproof liner for incontinent seniors.
- Non-slip base: a stiff dog must not have its bed sliding as it gets up.
- Step-free access: low or absent edges so climbing in is effortless.
How do you pick the right size?
Measure your dog lying on its side, from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail, and add 15 to 20 cm. If hesitating between two sizes, take the larger. For sizing in general, our guide to choosing a dog bed by size details the method; all our bedding comparisons are in the bedding and habitat section.
Frequently asked questions
From what age should you switch to an orthopedic bed?
There is no minimum age: from the first signs of stiffness, or preventively for a large breed, the extra cost is justified.
Does an orthopedic bed replace arthritis treatment?
No. It improves comfort at rest, but managing arthritis (treatment, weight, adapted exercise) is decided with your vet.
Memory foam or high-resilience cold foam?
Memory foam moulds to the body better; cold foam offers more support and ages well. Good models often combine both layers.
