What the landmark study shows
A study by Zink, Farhoody, Elser, Ruffini, Gibbons and Rieger, published in 2014 in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, followed 2,505 Vizslas to assess cancer and behavioural disorder risk by age at spay or neuter (see the study). Dogs neutered at six months or younger had significantly higher odds of developing a behavioural disorder, including separation anxiety, compared with intact dogs or those neutered later.
The role of daily enrichment
- Food-dispensing toys, introduced from the very first absences to link alone time with a rewarding activity rather than an anxious void.
- A snuffle mat or search toy, since this famously velcro breed is especially sensitive to a lack of mental stimulation while home alone.
- Short, gradually lengthened absences, built up from a young age to accustom a strongly attached breed to solitude without distress.
When to seek help
