The Beagle is a small scenthound of 9 to 11 kg bred for centuries to follow a scent trail relentlessly. A study published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science showed that nosework games improve dogs' emotional state, an effect especially relevant for a breed this driven by scent. Scent games every day
Hiding kibble in a snuffle mat, in cardboard boxes or in the garden grass gives a Beagle a mentally exhausting activity that channels its instinct without requiring huge space. Fifteen to twenty minutes of scent searching often tires it out more than a long regular walk.
Progressive tracking trails
Laying a trail with a strongly scented treat, short and simple at first then longer and more complex with direction changes, taps into its original purpose while staying a game accessible in the city as well as the countryside. It pairs well with classic treat-dispensing toys.
Securing walks for a nose-led dog
