Probiotics for dogs: real usefulness and when to consider them

Probiotics now appear on many dog kibble bags and supplements, but their real-world effectiveness is often misunderstood. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial by Rose and colleagues, published in 2017 in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine (see the study), followed dogs in a shelter — a setting rich in stress and diet changes that favours digestive upset — and found a significant reduction in diarrhea incidence among dogs given the probiotic-prebiotic supplement compared with the placebo group. What probiotics actually are
These are live bacterial strains selected to transiently colonise the digestive tract and support gut flora balance. Not all strains are equal: those studied in dogs (often specific lactobacilli and enterococci) are not interchangeable with probiotics formulated for humans, whose effectiveness in dogs is unproven.
When a probiotic makes sense
Available evidence mainly supports use during digestive risk periods: diet changes, travel, boarding or shelter stays, antibiotic treatment, one-off stress. They are no substitute for veterinary advice in cases of persistent diarrhea, blood in the stool or lethargy.
Choosing a serious product
Favour a product that lists the specific strain or strains (not just "probiotics"), a guaranteed colony-forming unit count through the expiry date, and dog-specific data rather than a generic formula.
