Which dogs need it most?
Floppy-eared breeds (cocker spaniel, basset hound, labrador) and dogs that swim regularly build up more moisture and wax, fertile ground for ear infections. Erect-eared breeds with an open canal generally need far less frequent care, best adjusted with a vet's advice at routine check-ups.
How do you apply the cleaner correctly?
- Amount: fill the visible part of the canal without excess, holding the bottle away from the ear itself.
- Massage: gently massage the base of the ear for ten to twenty seconds to loosen debris.
- Wiping: let the dog shake its head, then wipe off the visible excess with cotton, never a deep cotton swab.
- Frequency: once or twice a month for routine care, more often only on veterinary advice.
What signs should raise concern?
A strong smell, coloured discharge, repeated scratching or a red, warm ear go beyond routine maintenance: these signs point to an ear infection and call for a vet visit before any cleaning, which could temporarily mask the symptoms. Regular cleaning stays a complement to overall hygiene care, alongside brushing by coat type.
What budget should you plan for?
A bottle of veterinary ear cleaner costs 8 to 15 € and lasts several months with routine use. Ear wipes, handy while travelling, cost a bit more per use but stay comparable over a year.
