Cycling with your dog: basket, trailer or handlebar bag, which one?
Three options exist for taking a dog along on a bike: a front or rear basket for small dogs up to 8-10 kg, an enclosed trailer for heavier or more fragile dogs, and a handlebar bag reserved for very small dogs on short rides. Which option fits your dog's weight and build?
- Under 8 kg: front basket fixed to the handlebars, the dog stays visible and reassured.
- 8 to 15 kg: reinforced rear basket on a pannier rack, or a light trailer.
- Over 15 kg: trailer only, no basket is rated for this weight.
- Older, arthritic or recovering dog: a trailer with suspension, the only option that avoids repeated jolts.
Basket or trailer: what safety details should you check?
For a basket, insist on crossed chest straps, never a plain harness clipped on with no dedicated anchor: sudden braking would otherwise throw the dog out of the basket. For a trailer, check the hitch is certified compatible with your bike, that ventilation is cross-flow, and that a mesh window lets the dog see outside without being able to jump out. Either way, a safety harness inside, clipped to an anchor point, rounds out the basic kit.
How do you get a dog used to travelling by bike?
Start with very short sessions with the bike stationary, so the dog links the basket or trailer to a neutral experience. Move on to calm two-to-three-minute rides before stretching the distance over several weeks.
