Your cat tracks where you are from your voice alone — and is startled if you "teleport"

A cat asleep in another room looks indifferent to what its owner is doing. An experiment by Takagi, Chijiiwa, Arahori, Saito, Fujita and Kuroshima, published in 2021 in PLOS ONE, suggests the opposite: it keeps a mental map of where you are, and updates it from the sound of your voice (see the study). Our equipment guides sit in the cat accessories section.

The setup: making a voice jump from one room to another

Fifty cats, in homes and in cat cafés, heard their owner calling them through a speaker placed behind a door, then, seconds later, through a second speaker on the opposite side — a physically impossible move in that time. Eight judges blind to the condition rated each cat's surprise on a 0 to 4 scale. The result is clear: cats reacted markedly more when the voice changed location than when it stayed put.

The control that makes the finding solid

A third experiment replayed the same relocation using non-social electronic sounds. Nothing happened: no difference between the two configurations. The surprise is therefore not triggered by a mere change in where a sound comes from, but by the spatial incoherence of a human voice. A second experiment, using other cats' meows, produced a different and unexpected effect the authors do not resolve.

What the study does not demonstrate

It does not show object permanence in the strict sense: you cannot separate a genuine representation of invisible displacement from simple incoherence detection. There was no condition using a familiarised stranger's voice, which limits the scope to the owner. And a surprise score assigned by observers remains a behavioural measure, not a physiological one.

The practical consequences, including a counterintuitive one

Two applications follow, one reassuring, the other to be handled carefully. Reassuring first: talking aloud as you move around the home gives your cat landmarks it genuinely uses, and a cat that "follows" you from room to room without seeing you is doing more than reacting to footsteps. To handle carefully: two-way cameras and feeders that play a recorded voice while you are out broadcast that voice from a fixed point where you are not. Nothing proves this is distressing, but nothing proves it is soothing either — and at minimum this work shows cats process that kind of information rather than ignoring it. Our guide to a comfort object during absences covers alternatives whose effect is better documented, as does the one on the pheromone diffuser.

  • 50 cats tested, homes and cat cafés combined.
  • 8 blind judges scoring surprise from 0 to 4.
  • No effect with electronic sounds: the specificity really is to the human voice.
  • Your cat tracks your position without seeing you — but the study says nothing about how it feels about it.

The same team showed elsewhere that cats infer an object's presence from the sound it makes, a neighbouring mechanism covered in our article on noisy toys and inference from sound.

Frequently asked questions

Does my cat really locate me by ear?

The data show it represents your position from your voice and detects an inconsistency when that voice moves abruptly. That is a mental map, not merely orienting to a sound.

Should I avoid cameras that broadcast my voice?

No study has evaluated them. This work simply cautions against assuming they are soothing just because the voice is familiar.

Does it work with an unfamiliar voice?

That was not tested here: the finding is established only for the owner's voice.
