Facial pheromone spray before a trip: the effect measured on 150 cats
Published by Planète Pets · managing editor: Clément Lacaille · how our guides are written
Between the closed carrier and the journey itself, many cats freeze rather than struggle — a quieter but no less real form of stress. A non-drug product, synthetic facial pheromone spray, has been tested specifically for this exact moment of transport. Our gear comparisons are gathered in the cat travel and safety section.

150 cats, a before/after stress score
Shu and Gu published in 2022, in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, a randomised controlled pilot trial on the effect of a synthetic feline facial pheromone product during short-distance transport (see the study). 150 cats showing stress-related behaviours during a baseline screening were randomly assigned to a treated group (75 cats) or a placebo group (75 cats), with owners trained beforehand to score stress-related behaviours and an overall visual stress assessment taken 30 minutes after the trip began.
In the treated group, curled-up posture, lack of motion, and meowing during the trip significantly decreased compared with the placebo group.
What the study does not say
This is a pilot trial: it establishes a measurable effect, not yet an independent large-scale replication beyond the manufacturer. The composite score used does not break down each behaviour beyond the three cited, and follow-up stops at 30 minutes into the trip — nothing is measured for a longer journey or on arrival at the clinic. The study also does not compare this spray to a drug such as gabapentin before a vet visit, whose mechanism and time to effect are entirely different.
What this changes in practice
- Spray the carrier ahead of time rather than right before departure: the study's protocol calls for prior application, not spraying the moment the cat goes in.
- A complement, not a substitute, to a well-chosen and properly secured carrier: see our comparison of soft carriers versus hard carriers.
- Useful for quiet stress — a frozen, silent cat — just as much as for a cat that meows loudly, both profiles tracked in the study.
Frequently asked questions
Does the spray replace carrier training?
No, the study tests a one-off trip, not a gradual training process. The two approaches complement each other rather than being exclusive.
Should it be sprayed directly on the cat?
The published protocol covers application inside the carrier, not on the animal. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions rather than intuition.
Is the effect visible from the first trip?
Yes, the trial measures an effect from the single trip tested, without requiring repeated prior use. Find all our guides on the cat hub.
