White noise for a bird's sleep: useful against household noise?
Published by Planète Pets · managing editor: Clément Lacaille · how our guides are written
A white noise machine (15 to 30 €) replaces neither full darkness nor a cage cover, but it answers a different problem: the sudden household sounds — television, conversation, doors — that wake a bird already asleep in the dark. A study on wild birds sheds light on why this kind of repeated waking takes a toll on sleep, even without any stray light.

What does the study on noise and artificial light show?
A study by Grunst, Grunst, Raap, Pinxten and Eens, published in 2023 in the journal Environmental Pollution, followed wild great tits exposed to traffic noise and artificial light at night, separately and then combined. The key finding: noise and light disrupted sleep additively, each worsening the effect of the other, with variation by sex and season. A bird exposed to noise alone, even in full darkness, already slept worse than unexposed birds.
Why transpose this to a companion bird?
This study covers urban great tits, not a parrot in a living room, but the mechanism it documents — unpredictable noise interrupting sleep independently of light — applies to any bird species. A bird covered by a cage cover but kept near a living room where the television stays on late reproduces exactly this scenario: adequate darkness, uncontrolled disruptive noise. Our guidance on how much sleep each species needs is detailed in the guide to sleep and darkness in birds.
How can white noise concretely help?
- Masking brief sound spikes (laughter, doors, barking) by maintaining a steady, predictable background sound that is easier to ignore than a silence broken intermittently.
- Moderate volume: set just loud enough to cover background noise from the next room, never louder than normal conversation.
- Placement away from the cage, never right against the bars, to avoid constant sound exposure at too close a range.
- Automatic shutoff or a timer, so the sound does not run all night for no reason once the household has gone to bed.
Can white noise replace a cage cover?
No: the two address different disruptions, one visual and one acoustic, and the Grunst study specifically shows they add up rather than substitute for one another. For darkness, see our guide to cage covers at night. All our setup solutions for quality sleep are gathered in the bird bedding and habitat category.
Frequently asked questions
Could white noise stress a bird rather than calm it?
Yes, if the volume is too high or the source too close. Introduce it gradually during the day before using it at night, and watch the bird's behaviour over the first few evenings.
Does soft music work as well as white noise?
Less well for masking unpredictable sound: music with melodic variation draws attention, while steady white noise blends into the background.
Should every bird species use white noise?
It is mostly useful in noisy homes or shared apartments; a bird already in a quiet room usually does not need it.
