In short: 20 to 30 cm as an adult, 80 to 100 L minimum per individual, cool water between 15 and 20 °C. A placid, curious neotenic amphibian, to be kept alone or among axolotls, never with fish that nip its gills. A cold-water animal kept below 22 °C on very fine, non-ingestible sand: swallowed gravel and summer heat are its two deadly dangers.

The Axolotl lives at the bottom: its ground is made of soft sand — sharp gravel is banned —, hollow roots and clear patches to sift through. An aquarium’s enrichment is its hiding places and its currents — not fluorescent ornaments.

Territory and tankmates

The axolotl explores by night: smooth pottery hides, robust plants and dim light make up its ground — and no tankmates, since its gills tempt every fish.

Food as occupation

Vary the serving style: frozen prey released into the current, food scattered at several points of the tank, feeding spots moved day to day. Hunting occupies — the fishkeeping equivalent of a snuffle mat.
