Who it is for, and who it is not for
This guide is for you if…
- You are bringing a puppy home in the coming weeks and want to prepare everything, paperwork included.
- Your puppy is between 8 weeks and 6 months old and you want a clear method, not scattered tips.
- You want to train with rewards, in short sessions that fit family life.
- You want to know the real cost of the first year before committing.
It will not help you if…
- Your dog is an adult or already has an established behavior problem (aggression, severe anxiety): see a veterinary behaviorist.
- You are looking for a medical protocol or medication doses: this guide always refers you to your vet.
- You are looking for force-based training methods: this guide explains why it does not use them.

Toilet schedule by age
| Age | Daytime interval (awake, calm) | Night | Typical number of trips per 24 h |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 to 10 weeks | Every 1 to 2 hours, plus every trigger | 1 to 2 scheduled trips with an alarm | A dozen or more |
| 10 to 12 weeks | About every 2 hours | 1 scheduled trip, gradually pushed later | 8 to 12 |
| 3 to 4 months | About every 3 hours | 0 to 1 trip depending on the log | 6 to 10 |
| 4 to 6 months | About every 4 hours | Usually none; late last trip | 5 to 7 |
| After 6 months | Every 5 to 6 hours, depending on the dog | None | 4 to 5 |
Basis: the “hours ≈ age in months” rule of thumb and the list of toilet times from the American Kennel Club (akc.org, accessed 09/2026), turned into a schedule by Planète Pets. Adjust using your house-training log.
At what age is a puppy dry at night?
There is no single age: it depends on the puppy’s size (small breeds have small bladders), the time of the last meal, the last toilet trip and how regular the routine is. Rather than an age, use this rule:
- When your puppy wakes up dry 3 nights in a row at the time of the scheduled trip, push that trip 30 minutes later.
- When it stays dry 7 nights in a row with the trip scheduled at the time you get up anyway, drop the night-time trip.
- If there is a night accident, go back to the last schedule that worked for a week.
To help: last meal at least 3 hours before bed, last toilet trip as late as possible, and a calm evening. Never restrict water during the day to avoid night-time peeing; just avoid the big bowl right before sleep, except in hot weather.
