Why birds are so sensitive to air
A bird’s respiratory system is nothing like ours: rigid lungs through which air flows continuously, connected to air sacs. A review published by Brown, Brain and Wang in 1997 in Environmental Health Perspectives stresses that gas uptake relative to body weight is very high in birds, at rest and even more so during activity, to the point that birds can serve as sentinels of air quality. That explains the old story of the canary in the coal mine, and why a product you breathe without discomfort can kill a 30 g bird.
Non-stick pans (PTFE, “Teflon”)
PTFE is the non-stick coating on many frying pans, saucepans, griddles and cooking appliances. When overheated, it releases toxic breakdown products. In a study published in 1982 in the American Journal of Veterinary Research, Wells, Slocombe and Trapp exposed 32 budgies to fumes from overheated PTFE cookware or, for comparison, from plain aluminium cookware. PTFE fumes caused acute respiratory distress and rapid death in many of the exposed birds, with bleeding in the lungs; the budgies exposed to plain aluminium did not have these lesions.
Decision rules:
- When you have a bird, gradually replace non-stick cookware with stainless steel, cast iron or PTFE-free ceramic. It is the only measure that removes the risk.
- As long as you keep some: never an empty non-stick pan on the heat, never cooking on high heat, extractor fan on, kitchen door closed, cage in a distant room.
- Brussels Environment also mentions toasted-sandwich makers, raclette or table-grill appliances and any non-stick appliance: do not use them in the bird’s room.
- As a precaution, keep the bird away from the kitchen during an oven’s high-temperature self-cleaning cycle and when using a new appliance for the first time.
