Glass or OSB terrarium: which should you choose?
An OSB terrarium insulates better, costs less to heat and suits large desert species like the bearded dragon; a glass terrarium offers full visibility, withstands humidity and is the obvious choice for tropical species. At 100 to 400 € depending on size, the right pick mostly comes down to the humidity level your animal requires.
What are the advantages of an OSB terrarium?
OSB (compressed wood panels) insulates four to five times better than glass: the heating runs less, which trims the electricity bill by 20 to 40 % on large enclosures. It is also lighter at equal size, cheaper per litre (a 120 × 60 × 60 cm unit sells for 150 to 250 €) and easy to drill for cables and probes. Its opaque walls reassure nervous animals.
When does glass remain essential?
As soon as humidity stays above 60-70 % for long periods, untreated OSB swells and grows mould. For a crested gecko, a corn snake going through an extended shed or any planted tropical terrarium, glass (or fully sealed OSB, which costs more) is the way to go. Glass is also easier to disinfect, a genuine hygiene advantage.
How do they compare point by point?
- Insulation: clear win for OSB;
- Humidity: advantage glass, unless the OSB is sealed;
- Price: OSB cheaper in large sizes, glass competitive in small formats;
- Weight: a 120 cm glass enclosure weighs 40 to 60 kg, so plan a sturdy stand;
- Looks: panoramic visibility for glass, furniture-like finish for OSB.
Which buying mistakes should you avoid?
Never pick a size based on price: an undersized enclosure tops the list of first-terrarium mistakes. Check the quality of the vents (high and low), the glass thickness (6 mm minimum beyond 100 cm) and, for OSB, a food-grade varnish or sealed finish on exposed areas. Frequently asked questions
Can you build an OSB terrarium yourself?
Yes, for 80 to 150 € in materials. Take care over the vents, the sealing of the joints and the sliding front; a poorly ventilated enclosure condenses and grows mould.
Does OSB give off harmful substances?
Modern E1-rated panels emit very little formaldehyde. Let the varnish cure for several days and air the enclosure out before moving the animal in.
Does the mesh top of a glass terrarium lose heat?
Yes, mesh lids leak both heat and humidity. You can cover part of the screen with a suitable panel, but never block all the ventilation.
