Budget or premium hay for your rabbit? The real dividing line is not price, it is visible quality: green, leafy, fragrant, dust-free hay, whether it costs 2 € or 6 € per kilo. Since hay makes up 80 % of the diet, it is the one item where cheap quality is paid back directly in vet bills — yet some pet-shop “premium” hays mostly charge you for a pretty bag.
What is budget hay really worth?
Supermarket bags at 2-3 € per kilo are a lottery: sometimes decent, often yellow, brittle and dusty — the mark of old, over-dried, nutrient-poor hay. A rabbit snubs it, eats less fibre and wears its teeth badly. The hard, leafless stalks end up in the bin: “cheap” hay wasted at 50 % costs more than good hay eaten in full.
Is pet-shop premium hay worth its price?
Branded hays at 5-7 € per kilo (Crau PDO, mountain hays, flower blends) are generally excellent: controlled harvest, gentle drying, resealable bags. But you are also paying for marketing. The best value lies elsewhere:
- Farm bales direct from the producer: 1.50 to 3 € per kilo in 5 or 10 kg lots, unbeatable freshness;
- Crau PDO hay in bulk packaging: 3 to 4 € per kilo, the benchmark for palatability;
- Specialist online small-pet shops: 3 to 5 € per kilo in 4 to 5 kg boxes.
How do you judge a hay, whatever its price?
Four sensory criteria: predominantly green colour, plenty of leaves (not just stalks), a pleasant dry-grass smell, and zero dust cloud when you shake it. Discard any hay that smells musty or contains brown patches: a risk of serious digestive trouble, to be followed up by a rabbit-savvy exotics vet if your rabbit has eaten some. No: a rabbit that cuts its hay intake takes a dental and digestive risk. Switch to a leafier hay, even if it means mixing the two during the transition.
Is organic hay essential?
No: good-quality conventional hay is perfectly fine. The label matters less than freshness and leaf content.
