Dissolved oxygen gradually runs out while the CO2 the fish releases builds up, acidifying the water in the bag. A bag filled to one-third water and two-thirds air, as used when bringing fish home from the store, extends this window noticeably compared to a bag overfilled with water.
How can you extend transport time safely?
- Thermal insulation: slide the bag into a box or an insulated bag to limit temperature swings.
- Pure oxygen: pet stores can inflate the bag with oxygen instead of air for longer trips.
- Relative darkness: a dark environment calms the fish and slows its metabolism, so it uses less oxygen.
- Avoiding jolts: a stable ride limits stress and the build-up of metabolic waste.
What should you do for a trip longer than 8 hours?
Plan a partial water change halfway through in a clean container at a matching temperature, or refresh the oxygen if possible. A temporary quarantine tank at your destination also lets you acclimate the fish gently after a particularly long journey.
Does the type of fish change these limits?
