What a landmark study on the ferret rabies vaccine shows
A study by Rupprecht, Gilbert, Pitts, Marshall and Koprowski, published in 1990 in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, evaluated an inactivated rabies vaccine in domestic ferrets: every vaccinated animal developed neutralizing antibodies within 30 days, maintained for at least a year, compared with no seroconversion in unvaccinated controls (study on PubMed). Following a rabies virus challenge, 89% of vaccinated ferrets survived versus less than 6% of unvaccinated controls, a gap that directly underpinned the licensing of today's vaccination protocols.
