It's also naturally calming: scent-search work activates brain circuits linked to relaxation, unlike a game of fetch, which winds a dog up.
How do you use a snuffle mat properly?
- First sessions: hide treats in plain sight so the dog understands the idea.
- Progression: tuck them deeper into the folds over the following weeks.
- Frequency: two to three sessions of five to fifteen minutes a week are plenty.
- Meal portion: use the dog's actual kibble ration rather than extra treats, to avoid weight gain.
Which snuffle mat should you choose for your dog?
For a puppy or a first attempt, a simple mat with shallow folds at 10-15 € is enough. An experienced or highly food-motivated dog will appreciate a more complex model with velcro-sealed pockets, around 15-25 €. Check that it's machine washable, essential for hygiene after every use, and that the stitching holds up to a dog that digs hard.
