A study by Reisner, Houpt and Shofer, published in 2005 in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, analysed over 1,000 questionnaires from English Springer Spaniel owners to estimate the prevalence of owner-directed aggression (see the study). Nearly 48% of the dogs in the sample had already growled or shown more marked aggression toward their owner, and over a quarter had bitten a human at least once. Male sex, neuter status and show lines all stood out as factors associated with higher risk.
