Indoor Aviary: The Guide to Offering a Real Flying Space
Between the classic cage and the garden aviary, the indoor aviary stands out as the best compromise for anyone who wants to offer their birds genuine flying space without exposing them to the whims of the weather. Here is how to choose yours.
For whom, and for how many birds?
The indoor aviary is aimed first and foremost at lively small species: budgerigars, canaries, lovebirds, zebra finches, cockatiels. A group of four to six budgies thrives in an aviary 180 cm tall and 100 to 150 cm wide. For canaries, excellent fliers, width matters even more than height. Large parrots, on the other hand, call for very sturdy dedicated cages rather than standard wire aviaries.
Budget and materials
Expect 150 to 400 € for an indoor aviary of decent quality, and up to 700 € for large models in heavy-gauge metal. Points to check:
- Safe mesh or bars: unchipped epoxy-coated steel or stainless steel; cheap galvanised mesh can leach zinc, toxic if chewed.
- Spacing: 10 to 12 mm for budgies and canaries, just as for a classic cage.
- Castors with brakes: essential for moving the whole unit at cleaning time.
- Removable tray bases and wide doors, which simplify daily upkeep.
Where should it go?
A bright living area, without abrupt through-traffic, with at least one side of the aviary against a wall. Absolutely avoid the kitchen (fumes, non-stick cookware) and draughty rooms — our home safety article details these risks. The floor must bear the weight and be easy to clean: a protective mat under the aviary spares parquet and carpet from scattered seed.
Furnishing without overcrowding
The guiding principle: keep a central flight corridor clear. Place natural wood perches and ropes at the ends, multiple feeding stations at mid-height on the sides, and a few toys in rotation. A heavy bathing dish on the floor or a hanging bird bath completes the setup. Add non-toxic plants around it (not inside — they would be shredded) for a soothing look.
