Hamster or gerbil for beginners? The honest comparison
Hamster or gerbil for a first pet? If you want a rodent you can watch during the day and that lives in pairs, choose the gerbil; if you are more of a night owl and prefer a solitary animal, the hamster is for you. Both need serious housing, which you can explore in our bedding and habitat category for rodents.
How do their daily rhythms differ?
This is the deciding factor. The hamster is strictly nocturnal: it sleeps all day and wakes up around 9 or 10 pm. The gerbil alternates bursts of activity and rest around the clock: you can watch it dig, play and interact in broad daylight. For a family with a standard schedule, the gerbil offers far more opportunities for observation.
Solitary or in a group: which should you pick?
- Hamster: strictly solitary. Two hamsters kept together end up fighting, sometimes to the death.
- Gerbil: social — adopt a same-sex pair. A lone gerbil becomes depressed.
- Lifespan: 2 to 3 years for a hamster, 3 to 5 years for a gerbil.
- Handling: the gerbil, quick but curious, rarely bites; a hamster woken during the day may nip.
What housing and budget should you plan for?
A hamster needs a large tank of at least 100 × 50 cm with 25 cm of bedding to dig in; a pair of gerbils requires a tank with 30 cm of substrate, because digging tunnels is their main occupation. Expect 120 to 200 € for the setup in both cases, then 15 to 25 € per month. To avoid the classic pet-shop traps, read our article on colorful tube cages and our list of first-hamster mistakes.
Which one suits children best?
Neither is a toy, but the gerbil — active by day and unlikely to bite — lends itself better to observation by a supervised child. A hamster woken from its sleep turns grumpy: guaranteed frustration for a child in bed by 8:30 pm. Our guide to rodents and children covers the question in detail.
Frequently asked questions
Does a gerbil smell less than a hamster?
Yes. Native to arid steppes, the gerbil urinates very little: its tank needs cleaning less often than a hamster habitat.
Can a hamster and a gerbil live together?
Never. They are two species with incompatible needs; any attempt at cohabitation ends in serious injuries.
Which one costs less to adopt?
Prices are similar: 10 to 20 € per animal at a pet shop or rescue. The setup, not the animal, is the real expense.
