Heavy bowls and no-tip fountains: stopping the ferret that empties its water

🦦 Ferrets · 🧰 Accessories · updated 2026-07-11

Against a ferret that flips everything, two solutions have proven themselves: the heavy wide-based ceramic bowl (€8 to €15) and the no-tip fountain with a stable reservoir (€25 to €40). Digging in the water and shoving containers around is normal exploratory behaviour in ferrets; the right equipment channels the game instead of fighting it.

Why does a ferret systematically tip over its bowl?

Ferrets shovel with their front paws: they dig in the water, slide lightweight dishes around and flip plastic bowls for fun. The result: soaked litter, waterlogged kibble and an animal left without a drink while you are out — a real risk in summer, as our heatwave and ferrets guide points out. The answer is not punishment, but containers its 1 to 2 kg cannot shift.

Which heavy bowl should you choose for a ferret?

Is a no-tip fountain worth the investment?

A fountain with a wide, low reservoir and a floor-level centre of gravity withstands the assaults and keeps filtered water moving, which encourages many ferrets to drink more: a real asset for urinary prevention. Expect €25 to €40, plus €3 to €5 a month in filters, and a full weekly clean to keep biofilm at bay. Always keep a second water point (bottle or fixed dish): a silently failed pump must never leave the animal without water.

How do you limit the mess around the water station?

Set the bowl or fountain on a lipped tray or an absorbent mat (€5 to €10), away from the litter and the bedding. If your ferret splashes out of boredom, give it a dedicated outlet: a play basin of water during outings, or a dig box that redirects the urge to dig. A suddenly increased thirst, on the other hand, can signal a metabolic problem: mention it to an exotics vet. Our tested models are in the ferret accessory comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Bottle or bowl: which is better?

The bowl allows more natural lapping and a better volume; the bottle serves as a tip-proof backup. The ideal is to install both.

How much water does a ferret drink per day?

Around 75 to 100 ml per kilo, more in summer or on a kibble diet. Consumption that doubles for no reason deserves an exotics vet check.

Are plastic fountains safe?

Yes if the plastic is rigid and the pump inaccessible. Ceramic remains more stable and easier to keep truly clean.
