Winter coats for dogs: genuinely useful or just a gimmick?

🐕 Dogs · 🧰 Accessories · updated 2026-07-11

Spotted around town as soon as the first cold snap hits, the dog coat makes some people smile and wins others over. A fashion accessory for some, essential protection for others: the truth mostly depends on the dog wearing it. Planète Pets separates the useful from the superfluous, alongside our dog accessories section.

The dogs that genuinely need one

A Husky or a Pyrenean Mountain Dog has no use for a coat: its double coat is remarkable natural insulation. A coat does, however, provide real value for:

A dog that shivers, hunches up or refuses to move on in cold weather is giving you the answer itself. If a dog suddenly and unusually feels the cold, a vet visit is in order: it can signal a health problem.

Coat, raincoat or jumper: which protection to choose?

It all depends on the main enemy. Against rain, a light unlined raincoat is enough and avoids overheating. Against dry cold, a quilted, fleece-lined coat is the right call. Against both, 3-in-1 models with a removable lining offer the best versatility. For sporty dogs that hike in winter, there are breathable technical coats, in the spirit of the gear covered in our harness or collar guide: in that case, check for an opening for the leash or harness attachment.

Taking measurements properly

The reference measurement is the back length, from the withers to the base of the tail, supplemented by the girth and the neck circumference. The coat should cover the back and loins without restricting the shoulders or getting in the way when the dog relieves itself. Wide hook-and-loop fastenings make dressing impatient dogs easier. Try it on, have the dog walk and trot: a dog that freezes like a statue is probably wearing the wrong size.

How much should you budget?

Expect €15 to €30 for a simple raincoat, €25 to €60 for a good-quality lined winter coat, and €60 to €90 for a large technical model. Giant sizes and breed-specific cuts (sighthounds, Dachshunds) cost a little more but fit far better.

The Planète Pets verdict

Neither a universal gimmick nor an absolute must-have: the coat is a targeted tool, invaluable for dogs vulnerable to the cold and pointless for northern breeds. In winter, remember the paw pads too (a protective balm against road salt) and a well-insulated bed, a topic covered in our guide to choosing a bed by size. All our guides are on the dog hub.
