Moulting tools for rabbits: glove, brush or comb — what do you really need?

🐇 Rabbits · 🧴 Care & grooming · updated 2026-07-11

For a rabbit’s moult, three tools cover every need: the soft-nubbed silicone glove for the bulk of the undercoat on a sensitive rabbit, the soft brush with natural bristles or protected pins for routine upkeep, and the fine comb to finish the matting-prone areas (hindquarters, flanks). No need to buy an arsenal: a glove-plus-comb duo, at 12 to 20 €, is enough for most short-haired rabbits.

Which moulting tool for which coat type?

Why does moult brushing matter so much?

Rabbits groom themselves like cats but cannot vomit: swallowed hair builds up in the stomach and, combined with a low-fibre ration, can form a plug (trichobezoar) that slows and then blocks the gut. During the moult, daily brushing removes most of the dead hair before it is ingested. Unlimited quality hay does the rest by carrying hair through the digestive tract — see our guide to choosing a good hay.

What does an effective session look like?

Settle the rabbit on a non-slip mat, on the floor. Run the glove with the lie of the coat in broad strokes, then gently against it on the rump, where the undercoat lifts off in patches. Finish with the comb on the flanks and chest. Five to ten minutes maximum: short and daily beats long and endured. Reward with a dried herb at the end of the session.

When should a moult be a worry?

A moult in patches leaving skin bare and red, heavy dandruff (often a sign of cheyletiellosis, a parasite) or a rabbit eating less during the moult all warrant a consultation with an exotics vet. A slowed gut in mid-moult is an emergency. Find our other guides in the care and grooming section of the rabbit hub.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a rabbit's moult last?

Two to six weeks, usually in spring and autumn; central heating can cause near-continuous moulting indoors.

Does a damp glove replace the brush?

Running a slightly damp hand over the coat after brushing catches loose hairs: a good complement, but not enough on its own during a heavy moult.

Can a rabbit be bathed during the moult?

No, baths are off-limits except on veterinary advice: major stress and a risk of hypothermia.
