What Size Enclosure or Cage Does a Rabbit Need? Why a Cage Alone Is Never Enough

It’s the first question every new owner asks: what size cage should I buy? Exotic vets and rescue organisations are unanimous: a standard cage on its own is never enough. Rabbits are built to run, leap and stand upright on their hind legs. Keeping one permanently confined to 100 x 50 cm encourages obesity, digestive trouble and behavioural problems.

The minimum floor space to remember

For a medium-sized rabbit, the general recommendations are:

In practice, a modular pen of 6 to 8 panels — ideally connected to a cage left permanently open as a “home base” — is the simplest and most affordable solution.

Why a cage alone is a problem

A confined rabbit quickly loses muscle mass and sinks into deep boredom. It may start gnawing the bars, scratching frantically or turning aggressive whenever the door opens. A rabbit with space, by contrast, expresses its natural behaviours: sprints, binkies (joyful leaps), exploration. It’s also far easier to litter train, as we explain in our guide to rabbit litter.

Pen, playpen or free roaming?

You have three main options:

What about a bonded pair?

Rabbits are social animals that ideally live in pairs (a neutered couple being the most harmonious combination). In that case, increase the floor space by at least 50 % and double the resources: two litter trays, two hay stations, two hideouts. This limits tension and lets each rabbit withdraw when it wants to. A 4 m² pen for two medium-sized rabbits is a solid starting point.

Furnishing the habitat

Whichever setup you choose, the space needs a litter tray, a hay rack, a water station, a hideout (hutch or tunnel) and some chew toys to keep your rabbit busy. Avoid wire-mesh floors, which are painful on the feet: go for a solid floor covered with a washable mat.

Our Planète Pets tip: rather than investing in an expensive large closed cage, combine a second-hand medium cage with a new modular pen — the total budget usually stays under 100 € for three times the space. Find all our habitat comparisons in the rabbit bedding and habitat section.
