Large-capacity water dispensers and bottles for rabbits: hydration without fail
A large-capacity water dispenser for a rabbit — a 500 ml to 1 L bottle, a gravity bowl or a fountain — safeguards hydration during a day away or in hot weather. But mind the hierarchy: the open bowl remains the most natural and most effective way to drink; the big dispenser is a back-up, never a replacement, because a rabbit drinks 50 to 150 ml per kilo per day, and more in summer.
Which types of large-capacity dispensers exist?
- Gravity-fed reservoir bowl (1 to 2 L, 8 to 15 €): a dish fed by an upturned reservoir, the best natural-versus-autonomy compromise;
- 500 ml to 1 L bottle with a stainless-steel ball (6 to 14 €): hygienic, but slow flow and an awkward neck position;
- Silent cat water fountain (25 to 45 €): filtered moving water, appealing but with a cable that absolutely must be protected;
- Simple doubling-up: two heavy ceramic bowls in two spots, a free and sturdy solution.
What should you check before buying?
Verify stability (a rabbit flips anything under a kilo), a material that cannot be chewed or is out of reach, sufficient flow (test the ball: it should release a drop at the lightest touch), and above all ease of cleaning: a reservoir you cannot get a brush into becomes a culture broth. Add a bottle brush (3 to 5 €) to the basket from day one.
Is a big dispenser enough for a weekend away?
For 24 to 36 hours, yes, provided you double the sources: a gravity bowl plus a back-up bottle, both tested for several days before departure, plus plenty of hay. Beyond that, a daily visit is a must — our guide holidays: take it along or arrange care covers the logistics. A rabbit deprived of water stops eating, and more than 12 hours without food is a matter for the exotics vet.
How do you maintain bottles and reservoirs?
Rinse and refresh the water daily, scrub with the bottle brush twice a week, descale monthly with thoroughly rinsed white vinegar. In summer, keep the reservoir in the shade and top up with wet greens — see our list of safe vegetables. All our comparisons are in the rabbit accessories section.
Frequently asked questions
Bowl or bottle: which should come first day to day?
The bowl: natural posture, efficient lapping, higher water intake. The large-capacity bottle serves as a secure back-up.
How much water should be provided per day?
Allow 50 to 150 ml per kilo: a 2 kg rabbit can drink 300 ml a day, nearly twice that in a heatwave or on a dry ration.
Is tap water suitable?
Yes, if it is good enough for you. Serve it at room temperature and change it as soon as it is fouled with hay or litter.
