Hemp or flax litter for rabbits: the plant-based litter face-off

🐇 Rabbits · 🧴 Care & grooming · updated 2026-07-11

Hemp litter or flax litter for your rabbit? Both are excellent choices: plant-based, highly absorbent (up to four times their weight), low in dust and free of the irritating essential oils found in resinous shavings. Flax is on average a touch softer and slightly less dusty; hemp, more widely available, is often cheaper and composts just as well. The verdict comes down to your rabbit’s respiratory sensitivity and local prices.

Hemp versus flax: what are the concrete differences?

Why prefer these litters to shavings and mineral litter?

Non-dedusted resinous shavings release phenols that irritate a rabbit’s airways and liver; clumping mineral cat litters are dangerous if ingested (obstruction). Hemp and flax, eaten in small amounts, remain harmless. Our full overview of materials is in the guide litter: which materials are safe.

How do you use these litters day to day?

Pour 3 to 4 cm into the bottom of the tray, add a handful of hay in one corner (rabbits eat while they eliminate — a real plus for litter training), remove soiled patches daily and empty everything twice a week. A 100 L bag lasts five to eight weeks for a tray-trained rabbit. Used litter goes to the compost heap or as mulch.

When should you worry despite a good litter?

Repeated sneezing, nasal discharge or runny eyes are not necessarily the litter’s fault: bacterial rhinitis and hay dust are other suspects. Switch litters to test, and if symptoms persist beyond a few days, see an exotics vet. Find all our guides in the care and grooming section of the rabbit hub.

Frequently asked questions

Can hemp and flax be mixed?

Yes, no problem: some breeders combine hemp (absorbent base) and flax (soft top layer). It is also a good way to use up two bags.

Does hemp come in pellet form?

Hemp is mostly sold as loose strands (hemp hurd). For pellets, turn to untreated white wood pellets, topped with a layer of strands for comfort.

Are these litters suitable for baby rabbits?

Yes, from weaning: they are non-toxic and soft. Simply check that a youngster is not eating the litter in large quantities.
