Retractable or standard leash: which one for your dog?
Retractable or standard leash: for the vast majority of dogs, a standard leash of 1.20 m to 2 m is the better choice, because it guarantees immediate control and doesn’t teach the dog to pull. The retractable keeps a narrow niche in specific contexts: a calm, already trained dog, in open spaces. In town or during training, the standard leash is the obvious pick. All our safety guides live in the dog travel and safety section.
Why is the retractable leash a problem for training?
A retractable keeps constant tension on the harness or collar: the dog mechanically learns that pulling makes it move forward. That is the exact opposite of loose-leash walking. Add a locking button that is hard to hit in an emergency, a thin cord that can burn or cut fingers, and 5 to 8 metres of range that give a dog time to reach the road: the safety record is poor in an urban environment.
Retractable or standard leash: which to choose by situation?
- Town, pavements, crowds: short standard leash (1.20 m), no hesitation.
- Training a puppy or a dog that pulls: standard only.
- Country walk with a dog whose recall is average: a 5 to 10 m long line, safer than a retractable.
- Very calm senior dog, open area: a tape-style retractable (not cord) can work.
- Reactive or powerful dog: standard leash with a second attachment point, never a retractable.
What quality criteria make a good leash?
For a standard leash: nylon or biothane webbing 2 to 2.5 cm wide, a welded clip, reinforced stitching, a padded handle. Expect 10 to 25 €, up to 40 € for leather. For a retractable, choose a flat-tape model with a progressive brake, rated for the dog’s actual weight: 20 to 45 €. An undersized retractable snapping mid-street is a genuine accident scenario, just like certain collars, covered in our article on the choke collar.
Frequently asked questions
Are retractable leashes banned anywhere?
Some municipalities require a leash of 1 to 2 m maximum in public spaces: a fully extended retractable can put you in breach. Check your town’s local bylaws.
What length of standard leash should you choose?
1.20 m for town, 2 m for mixed areas, and a 5 to 10 m long line for recall work. Many owners end up with two leashes for distinct uses.
Leash on the collar or the harness?
On the harness for a dog that pulls or a puppy, to protect the windpipe. Find all our comparisons on the dog hub.
