What budget for your dog’s bed? Prices and lifespan

🐕 Dogs · 🏠 Bedding & habitat · updated 2026-07-11

A dog’s bedding budget ranges from 20 € for a simple small-size cushion to 150 € for a large orthopaedic mattress: expect on average 30 to 60 € for decent-quality bedding, to be renewed every two to four years. The real trap isn’t the purchase price but the lifespan: a 20 € bed replaced every year costs more than a 60 € model with a removable cover that lasts four years. Full reference points in the dog bedding and habitat section.

What bedding budget should you plan by size?

What justifies the price gap between two cushions?

Three things: the density of the filling (firm foam doesn’t collapse within six months, unlike bottom-price polyester flakes), the cover (removable, washable at 60 °C, solid zip) and the stitching. A collapsed bed no longer insulates from the floor and no longer cushions the joints: the dog is literally sleeping on fabric. The choice of format matters too; our plastic bed or cushion comparison helps you decide based on the dog’s profile.

When is orthopaedic worth the investment?

As soon as the dog is ageing, limping, or weighs over 30 kg: memory foam distributes the weight and relieves hips and elbows, real comfort for an arthritic dog. At 80-150 €, it is one of the best-value wellbeing purchases for a senior, alongside veterinary pain management. For a destructive puppy, on the contrary, wait until the chewing phase is over before investing anything.

How do you avoid paying for your bedding twice?

Get the size right the first time (dog lying down + 15 to 20 cm), insist on a removable cover, and protect the bed with a washable throw that soaks up hair and mud day to day. Be wary of second-hand bedding, a false economy because of odours and parasites, as explained in our guide to second-hand equipment. Finally, two mid-range beds often beat a single luxurious one: dogs like to switch spots.

Frequently asked questions

How often should bedding be replaced?

When the foam stays dented after the dog gets up or the seams give way: in practice every 2 to 4 years depending on the range.

Can a large dog sleep directly on the floor?

Not recommended: pressure points on the elbows, cold and damp. Elbow calluses often come from inadequate bedding.

Memory foam or classic foam?

Memory foam for seniors and large builds, classic firm foam for a young adult. All our guides are on the dog hub.
