Heated beds and pads for cats: winter comfort done right
A heated pad for cats keeps the sleeping spot between 25 and 35 °C: a real plus for kittens, elderly or arthritic cats, and any cat living in a chilly room. There are two families: self-warming pads that reflect body heat (15 to 25 €, no electricity) and low-voltage electric pads (25 to 60 €). For an outdoor cat, an insulated heated shelter costs 60 to 90 €.
Self-warming or electric pad: which should you choose?
The self-warming mat, lined with a reflective mylar-type layer, gains 5 to 10 °C with no cord and no power use: perfect in a temperate flat and entirely risk-free. The electric pad, running on 12 or 24 volts, guarantees constant thermostat-controlled warmth: choose it for an elderly cat or a cold conservatory. Its power draw stays modest, around 10 to 20 W — a few euros per winter. In every case, place the bed away from draughts, raised a few centimetres if the floor is tiled, and always leave the cat free to move away from the heat source whenever it wants.
What safety features should a heated pad have?
- Low voltage (12/24 V) with an external transformer.
- Built-in thermostat and automatic overheating shut-off.
- Steel-sheathed, chew-proof cable.
- Removable, machine-washable cover.
- Surface of around 40 × 30 cm, leaving room for the cat to shift away.
- CE certification and clear instructions.
Does an outdoor cat need a heated shelter?
Yes, if your cat sleeps outside in cold weather: a raised, insulated shelter with an entrance angled away from the wind, possibly fitted with a waterproof outdoor heating plate, prevents hypothermia. A cat that stays hunched in the cold or loses weight over winter should be examined by a vet. Indoors, complete the comfort with a sunny window perch and the elevated beds listed in the bedding and habitat section of our cat hub.
Frequently asked questions
Can a heated pad burn my cat?
Not with a thermostat-controlled low-voltage model that caps at around 38-40 °C on contact. Still check the cable’s condition regularly.
Can I leave the pad plugged in all night?
Yes, for models with a thermostat and safety shut-off; unplug the others when you are away.
My cat ignores its pad — what should I do?
Place it where the cat already sleeps, up high or near a window, and rub it with a cloth carrying its scent.
