Secure outdoor rabbit run: wire mesh, predators and best practice

🐇 Rabbits · 🧳 Travel & safety · updated 2026-07-11

A secure outdoor rabbit run rests on three protections: welded wire mesh with a fine grid (25 x 25 mm maximum) buried or folded outwards at ground level against escapes and diggers, a full wire roof against birds of prey, cats and stone martens, and a permanently shaded area with an enclosed shelter. Without all three, no unsupervised garden time is truly safe.

Which mesh keeps predators out?

Classic hexagonal chicken wire deforms and cuts easily: a determined marten or fox will get through it. Choose instead:

Materials budget for a 4 to 6 m² run: 80 to 150 € if you build it yourself, 150 to 350 € for a shop-bought run with a roof.

How do you stop the rabbit digging under the fence?

Rabbits are born excavators. A horizontal mesh skirt laid on the ground on the inside, covered with soil or slabs, remains the most reliable defence. Alternative: a perimeter of concrete slabs. Check weekly for the beginnings of tunnels, especially along the edges.

What should the run contain for the rabbit’s welfare?

A raised enclosed hideout, shade at every hour of the day (shade sail, hedge, parasol), fresh water renewed regularly, hay protected from rain and varied ground textures. In summer, heat kills more surely than predators: reread our advice on cooling a rabbit in a heatwave. In severe heat or if the rabbit seems listless, an exotics vet should be contacted quickly.

Should a rabbit be left outside unsupervised?

Never overnight in a simple run: only a sturdy closed hutch or a locked shelter protects against nocturnal predators — see our guide to the outdoor hutch. During the day, a fully meshed run (treated floor, closed roof) allows a few hours of independence. Find our other guides in the travel and safety section and on the rabbit hub.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum area for an outdoor run?

4 m² is a strict minimum for a few hours; 8 to 10 m² allows proper sprints for a pair of rabbits.

Are garden plants a danger?

Some are, yes: yew, oleander, foxglove, lily of the valley. Inspect the area and remove toxic plants before the first outing.

Can an indoor rabbit go straight out into the garden?

Yes, through gradual outings once temperatures are mild, with worming and vaccinations (myxomatosis, RHD) up to date — ask your exotics vet for advice.
