All-in-one aquarium kit or separate components: which to choose as a beginner?

🐠 Fishkeeping · 🧰 Accessories · updated 2026-07-11

For a first tank, the all-in-one kit is the simplest and cheapest choice: 100 to 150 € for 60 litres with tank, lighting, filter and heater — 20 to 30 % less than the same components bought separately. Separate components become worthwhile from the second aquarium onwards, once you know exactly what you want.

How good is the equipment in kits, really?

Kits from the big brands are coherent: a filter sized for the volume, a suitable heater, decent LED lighting for easy plants. Their limits: an internal filter with little room to upgrade, proprietary filter media that cost more to replace, and lighting rarely strong enough for demanding plants. To understand the alternative, read our comparison hang-on-back or internal filter.

How much does the same setup cost as separate components?

The extra cost buys freedom: each component can be replaced or upgraded independently, and standard consumables cost less over time.

In which cases are separate components the obvious choice?

Three situations: an ambitious planted tank (the kit’s lighting won’t keep up), a volume above 120 litres (an external filter becomes the norm), or a bare second-hand tank you’re fitting out. In that last case, a separate build often costs less than a new kit: see our 120-litre budget, item by item.

What strategy do we recommend for beginners?

Buy a kit from a reputable brand, but set aside 30 to 50 € to replace whatever shows its limits after six months — usually the lighting. You’ll learn with a coherent setup without breaking the bank, and you’ll then know exactly what to improve. All our equipment comparisons are grouped in the fishkeeping accessories category.

Frequently asked questions

Are bargain supermarket kits reliable?

Be wary: undersized filters and heaters without a precise thermostat are common there. Below 70 € for an equipped 60-litre tank, something has been sacrificed.

Can you replace a kit’s filter without changing everything?

Yes, it’s even the most common upgrade: any filter with the right flow rate (2 to 3 times the volume per hour) can replace the original. Keep the old one as a backup.

Does an all-in-one kit include the substrate and decor?

Almost never: add 40 to 70 € for substrate, plants and driftwood, whichever option you start with.
